Osuna is a compact baroque town 90 km southeast of Seville, elevated on a hill above the flat olive-grove plain of the Campiña. Its wealth in the 16th and 17th centuries — the Dukes of Osuna were among the most powerful noble families in Spain — produced a dense concentration of palaces, churches, and aristocratic mansions that most visitors from outside Spain have never heard of.

In recent years it has gained some profile as a Game of Thrones filming location: the local bullring doubled as Daznak’s Pit in Season 5, and the town itself appeared as Meereen.

What to see

Colegiata de Santa María de la Asunción is the main attraction. This Renaissance collegiate church sits at the top of the hill alongside the old ducal university buildings. The interior contains significant paintings and sculpture, and the ducal pantheon below it holds the marble tombs of several Dukes of Osuna. Entry €4, closed for lunch (1–4 pm typically).

The Monasterio de la Encarnación on the central Plaza Mayor contains an unusual collection of Baroque religious art, including a remarkable Cristo yacente (recumbent Christ) made of carved ivory with real human hair. This is not tourism-polished — it is a genuine working convent with a small museum section. Entry €2.

The Plaza Mayor itself is flanked by 18th-century buildings and has a working-town character that the larger Andalusian tourist towns have largely lost. The Osuna bullring is on the edge of town — the arena used for Game of Thrones — and is not a major attraction outside of show fans.

The grid of streets below the hill — Calle Carrera, Calle San Pedro — is lined with aristocratic mansions (some functioning as luxury hotels, others crumbling in picturesque style), a visual record of the town’s 17th-century wealth that no one has gentrified.

Getting there from Seville

By train: Regional services from Seville Santa Justa to Osuna take 1 hour 10 minutes (€6–8, several daily). The station is at the bottom of the hill, about 15 minutes’ walk from the centre.

By bus: Comes buses from Plaza de Armas, approximately 1h30, €5–8.

By car: A-92 east from Seville, about 1 hour. Easy parking available near the bullring.

A note on the GYG tours listed

The two tours listed (seville-italica-game-of-thrones-roman and seville-italica-3hr-game-of-thrones) focus on Itálica, not Osuna. Itálica is a separate destination that covers the Roman ruins and Game of Thrones connection (it was used as Dragonpit in Season 7). These tours do not visit Osuna. Osuna is best reached independently by train or car.

If you are visiting Osuna as part of a Game of Thrones itinerary, combining it with Itálica makes thematic sense, though the two are in different directions from Seville (Itálica northwest, Osuna southeast).

Honest planning notes

Osuna is genuinely worth visiting if you have the time and appreciate baroque architecture or have a particular interest in filming locations. Half a day is the right allocation: the town has perhaps 3–4 hours of things to actually see, and it is easy to do as a morning-to-early-afternoon trip from Seville.

The town is not tourist-oriented. Some restaurants and the Colegiata have irregular opening hours — particularly in winter and August. The standard Spanish lunch closure (2–4 pm) applies, and the Colegiata closes during this window. Arrive before noon or after 4 pm for the best access.

Combine with Carmona: If you have a car, Osuna and Carmona (see the Carmona guide) can be combined in one day — both are small towns to the east of Seville, each requiring 3–4 hours, with Carmona better for Roman history and Osuna for baroque architecture.

Frequently asked questions about Osuna

What Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in Osuna?

The Plaza de Toros (bullring) served as Daznak’s Pit in Season 5 (episodes “The Gift” and “The Dance of Dragons”) — the location of the fighting pits in Meereen. The town’s streets also appeared in various Meereen exterior shots. The bullring is not primarily set up as a Game of Thrones tourist site, though the town has leaned into the connection.

How long should I spend in Osuna?

Half a day (3–4 hours) covers the main sights: the Colegiata and ducal tombs, the Monasterio de la Encarnación, and a walk through the palace district. Add lunch and you have a comfortable 5-hour trip from Seville.

Is Osuna worth visiting if I am not a Game of Thrones fan?

Yes. The Baroque architecture and the ducal church are legitimate cultural attractions independent of any filming connection. Osuna offers a window into the enormous wealth of the Andalusian nobility in the 16th–17th centuries, largely without tour groups.

What is the best way to get from Seville to Osuna without a car?

Train is the most convenient option: regional services from Santa Justa station take 1 hour 10 minutes. Check Renfe for current schedules and prices.

Can I combine Osuna with Ronda in one day?

Osuna and Ronda are about 80 km apart (1h15 by car). Combining both in one long day is possible if you have a car and start early, but both deserve more attention than a rushed 2-hour visit each. A better approach is to devote a separate day to Ronda.
